Highlights

Construction equipment rental is big business, and United Rentals is the biggest of them all. Literally: they're the largest equipment rental company on the planet. So it stands to reason they need a robust mobile app to support their huge customer base.

That's where we come in.

We designed a utility app that not only handles the many functions United Rentals' digital platforms support—we made it visually represent the brand as well. And when UR refreshed its branding in 2023, we refreshed the app. In fact, the app was the first digital property to reflect the new brand, surpassing all client expectations in the process.

Our experience design team worked in lockstep with the app development squad to leverage native components for both iOS and Android, and we picked our spots to go beyond native to give the app a fully branded feel—without sacrificing dev time. We've also worked agilely to continue adding features along the way. The app now supports scheduling equipment pickups, requesting service, renting additional items, paying invoices, authorizing equipment access, and more.

The result? Happy customers, of course. 4.7+ ratings for apps in this industry are simply unheard of. And usage continues to climb. What started as a novelty member of the UR portfolio is now an integral part of its digital arsenal.

Even though the app is well established, we still get back to our roots when conceptualizing a new feature.

The cost schedule can be tricky for customers to understand. So we focused our UX efforts on simplifying how it's communicated visually, from a rate calendar to helpful tips that pop up to offer contextual guidance.

Just because it's a utility app that spends a lot of time in dirty pockets doesn't mean its UI can't be clean.
